John Charles Fremont, (b) Savannah, Ga., 1813-1890 (New York), Fremont was best known for his pioneer explorations from 1842 - 1851 and the Missouri and the northern frontier in 1838 in a Topographical study; 1842 the Rocky Mountain region, ascending the highest peak of Wind River Mountain, subsequently named Fremont's Peak; the Great Salt Lake region; California. After his arrival in California his conflicts General Kearny led to his conviction of mutiny, although Polk remitted his penalty Fremont resigned his post. He received the Presidential Republican nomination in 1856 for his opposition to slavery, however was defeated by Buchanan. He served as a United States Senator for California in 1850-51. During Stonewall Jackson's very successful Shenandoah Valley Campaign, Fremont suffered a crushing loss, which led to the resignation of his post. Fremont was Governor of Arizona from 1878-81. The book thoroughly covers his expeditions, along with his military, political and business successes and failures. Interior has light foxing throughout but the major fault is an area of discoloration to the upper right corner that extends from the front endpaper through page 58.Other than 154 years of normal age marks, the text, endpapers and illustratios are free of marks of any kind.
